University of Missouri Health Care offers a job shadow program for individuals interested in learning about a specific career at one of MU Health Care’s facilities.
If you intend to observe for school credit or as part of an internship, please contact us at umhshrstudent@health.missouri.edu. The program which applies to you is not considered job shadowing.
If you intend to shadow for more than 16 hours in a year, please contact umhc_hris@health.missouri.edu for additional vetting requirements and Staff Health clearance.
Requirements
A candidate must meet the following requirements:
- Be 16 years of age or older
- Have a parent or guardian grant permission and sign forms for individuals under age 18
- Have an authorization form sent by MUHC indicating you are cleared to Shadow.
Note: The program limits shadowing to 16 hours per year. The hours reset January 1 of each year.

If you do not see an area of interest above, please email muhcshadowprogram@health.missouri.edu with your preferred location/desired profession, and we'll try to connect you to a person in that area. Once you have secured a professional to Shadow with, create a profile in Clinician Nexus.
Create a Profile in Clinician Nexus
MU Health Care Partners with Clinician Nexus to collect the necessary information needed to authorize your shadowing experience. You will create a profile with Clinician Nexus and then search for Job Shadowing opportunities.

There are two options:
- Job Shadow (less than 16 hours per Calendar Year)
- Job Shadow (less than 16 hours per Calendar Year)(Minors – 16 to 18 years of age)

Even though you may not be a student in the traditional sense, you will select the role of "Student" when applying for shadowing.
Please submit your application at least 48 business hours before your anticipated Shadow date.
Access and Confidentiality
You will need to upload a signed copy of our Access and Confidentiality Agreement. This form is in Clinician Nexus, but you may download the form here:
You will also be required to sign-off that you have read and understand our HIPPA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability) requirements. This form is in Clinician Nexus, but you may download the form here:
Dress Code
Please wear closed-toe shoes and business casual attire (or scrubs if approved by the department or employee). Individual departments and employees may have additional dress code guidelines, so please inquire as to appropriate attire when arranging dates and times. No jeans or high heels.
Obtain your authorization form
Once you have been approved for your shadowing opportunity, you will be emailed/texted an authorization form that you will need to bring with you during your shadowing experience (either paper copy or on your phone). Please be sure to always have this authorization with you during your experience.
Parking Information
MU students should park in their normal permitted area. If you are an MU student without a permit, you will need to go online and purchase a normal student permit. Current MU students are not allowed to purchase permits as a visitor.
Non-students will need to go online to the parking website site and purchase a permit. They may also use meters on campus.
The best link to do this will be https://parking.missouri.edu/visitor-permit/. Click on Tiger Park Portal and create a visitor account.
