Cardiac Arrest Registry to Enhance Survival (CARES)

Welcome to the home of the Cardiac Arrest Registry to Enhance Survival (CARES) registry for the state of Missouri.

The Cardiac Arrest Registry to Enhance Survival (CARES) is a collaborative effort of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and Emory University, Woodruff Health Sciences with the goal of improving survival from sudden cardiac arrest.

CARES manages an online database system that reduces the time involved in registering out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) events and provides the ability to track first-responder and EMS response times as well as patient outcomes. CARES can be used by a variety of groups, including:

  • Hospitals
  • EMS agencies
  • Ambulance services
  • Fire departments
  • Researchers

The database and more information can be found on the CARES website at www.mycares.net. The Missouri registry is maintained by the University of Missouri Department of Emergency Medicine.

The CARES registry is designed to help local agencies identify:

  • Populations affected by sudden cardiac arrest.
  • Location and timing of those events occur.
  • Which elements of the system are functioning properly and which are not.
  • How changes can be made to improve cardiac arrest outcomes.

CARES in Missouri

Each of the six EMS regions in Missouri has at least one EMS agency submitting data to the CARES registry, resulting in nearly half of the state population (nearly 3 million people) being covered by CARES agencies.

How you can get involved

If you are a member of an agency listed above, you can use the CARES database to gain insights on cardiac arrest events that can help lead to better emergency cardiac treatment.

CARES participants can generate multiple real-time reports via secure online access, allowing for longitudinal, internal benchmarking. Both locally and nationally, there is increasing emphasis on the role of data collection as the foundation for improving care.

In its 2015 report “Strategies to Improve Cardiac Arrest Survival: A Time to Act,” the Institute of Medicine recommended the establishment of a national cardiac arrest registry “to monitor performance in terms of both success and failure, identify problems and track progress."

By participating in CARES, you are taking the first step to saving lives in your community. To get started, fill out the CARES account setup form by clicking the link below. If you are with a hospital and would like to establish a memorandum of understanding, please email cares@health.missouri.edu.
