Research Profile
For nearly 50 years, Khanna has worked to understand physiology and diseases of the kidney — a vital field called nephrology. Healthy kidneys are necessary to not only filter waste from the body, but also to produce hormones that help maintain blood pressure, red blood cell production and calcium balance.
Khanna collaborated with legendary physicians in the field to establish clinical practice standards for a therapy known as continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD): a treatment performed by patients at home with severe kidney failure. In addition, he was a key collaborator in establishing a clinical practice tool, the peritoneal equilibration test (PET), which allows physicians to assess the efficacy of CAPD therapy performed by dialysis patients. This procedure is now used globally by most clinicians.
Khanna is a member of the American Society of Nephrology, the International Society of Peritoneal Dialysis and other professional societies. He received the American College of Physicians’ MD Book Award, and in recognition of his extraordinary body of work, the National Kidney Foundation bestowed upon Khanna the J. Michael Lazarus Distinguished Award for outstanding research contributions to clinical science and care of dialysis patients.
Dr. Ramesh Khanna is a professor of medicine and the Karl D. Nolph Chair of Nephrology at the University of Missouri School of Medicine.
